Hallo,
My 230S is running fine and I had several holiday's with it (oa. to Rome, Paris, Muenchen) for big parts driving on the highways.

The 120PS M180 engine is also making a lot of noise on high speeds.

The car has originally a quite short rear axle transmission of 1 : 4,08.

The later 230.6 mercedes with the same engine did have shorter axles of 1 : 3,69.
To lower the revs somewhat I mounted 195/80 R14 wheels on it, which could add up to around 200RPM less at 120 km/h.
Anyway, I feel safe driving the car up to 140 km/h for longer distances without getting a bad feeling about the engine. (Even while running it on liquid petrol gas).
Good luck!

Mathieu

Thanks Floss. 120kmh is our speed limit here(not that too many people obey it...) so it should be a match made in heaven!
Cheers,

Clem

Thanks Robert. The car is in very good nick so I'm going to wind it up sometime and see how it goes. :-) The important point though for me is that I can run the machine happily at 120 or 130km/h with no worries. That I needed to know!
Cheers,

Clem

Hello Clem,
my own 280S of 1971 didn't ever complain if I was in a hurry a little bit ...
I never had any problems at an average speed of 170 km/h during more than two hours (ok, I've HAD one problem: my car guzzled more than 22 Litres of 98-octane-fuel at each 100 km!)
If the car is in a good shape, it shouldn't be a problem to push it to top speed and hold it there.

You should REALLY try that at home! :-))

Regards,

Robert

Hi Clem, the most pleasant cruising speed, in my Opininon would be the speed that is the limit of the 2nd highest gear plus 10%-20%.

In my Finntail for example the 3rd gear ends at about 100 km/h, so travelling arround 120 km/h in the 4th gear is the most pleasantly way to travel.

You are not too slow between the modern cars, the noise is within limits, and during longer travels you're still fast enough to reach the destination within a reasonable time effort.

Acctually on long distance travells I noticed moderns cars passing me several times on the Autobahn, cause they made a stop for what reason ever and I didn't.

Thus that the travel time difference becomes very small in the end.

Greetings Flossenpfleger
